the process

In the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the process for finding a pastor is guided by prayer, discernment, and collaboration between the congregation, the search team, and the regional governing body called the Presbytery. Each step is designed to ensure the best possible match between pastor and congregation.

Step 1: Elect the Search Team

The Search Team is nominated and elected by the congregation. These people will serve as our ambassadors during this process.

Step 2: Finalize Job Description

The i's will be dotted and the t's will be crossed to ensure everyone is clear on how this position fits into FPC's mission.

Step 3: Promote Position

This spreads the word that we are hiring. The job description will be shared through the official Church Leadership Connection, as well as through seminaries, networks, and word of mouth.

Step 4: Receive and Review

This phase is busy. Applications will begin arriving and each one will be prayerfully reviewed for experience, gifts, sense of call, and if they might be a fit here at FPC.

Step 5: Discern Candidates

This step involves checking references, listening to sermons, and interviewing candidates to learn about their gifts, experiences, and sense of call.

Step 6: Select the Candidate

After alot of work and prayer, the search team identifies one candidate they believe best fits FPC's mission and vision. The search team works with the Presbytery to confirm that decision and finalize details of the call.

Step 7: Congregation Votes

The Session will call a Special Meeting of the congregation where the search team will present the person they feel is called to serve as our next Associate Pastor.

Step 8: Celebrate!

This is the best part! We will welcome our new Associate Pastor with smiles, hugs, and high fives. We might even throw a party!

let's work together.
